Something we hear a lot of: “The Hard Drive is the bottleneck”. But what does that mean really? The quick practical explanation is that all the components in your computer are many times faster than the speed that your hard drive can read data. The end result is that the components in your computer, the CPU, the memory, etc, are waiting on your drive to read or write data.
You really feel this affect when you are dealing with large bandwidth applications, such as high definition video content or 3D image maps for games. You’ll find your self always waiting for the drive to “catch up” and it churns away at loading that important data for you. There are workarounds for this kind of thing, combining multiple drives together to increase speed, buying special drives with extra speed (but lower capacity), and so on.

There is a big shift on the horizon, by this time next year I really suspect the entire hard drive market will be nothing like we know today. 1TB or 2TB drives will be the norm, and today I read that Western Digital has a 20,000 RPM hard drive in the works! WOW! That blows the doors off what we have today for consumer drives. If you really want to spend some cash you could pickup a 10,000 RPM drive with out to much effort, the storage size would be low but you could get one. If you really are crazy for speed you may even be able to find a 15,000k drive.
These new drives that WD is working on will be crazy fast, and it really shows how we can push an old technology, like the megnetic hard drive platters, further and further!
Very exciting, and I can’t wait till these will be a sane price for regular Joes to own.
