King Mic for Podcasters: Heil PR-40

With the recent launch of Radio Revolver I made the big jump and upgraded my microphone, I don’t know, I guess I felt like it was time. When we started CastaBlasta forever ago I was using a microphone from Radio Shack that cost me somewhere in the ball park of $40; the audio quality was miserable but we did not know any better. Later down the road Bryan splurged and upgraded us to microphones that must have been about twice the cost of my trusty Radio Shack unit.![]()
These new mics sustained us well into a the beginning of The Linux Action Show and overall we again were happy, and again did not know any better. As we tweaked our show and style we began to want more and so we launched a quest to find the next round of microphones to get to that spot we knew the show could be at. This time around we went BIG. Bigger mixing board, better pop shields, and fancy-pants shock mounts with much improved Microphones – the MXL 900’s. This’s been the setup we have used for the last year and half and it has worked really well. I’m proud to say I think The Linux Action Show has some of the best audio quality out there and a huge part of that has been our MXL series microphones.
With new shows coming out, and the launch of Jupiter Broadcasting it really felt like it was time to step up once more, and upgrade to something top of the line to reflect our ambitions for Jupiter Broadcasting, enter the Heil PR-40. The PR-40 is truly a modern achievement in amazing microphone design, it has amazing highs, mid’s and lows. Its top fire-end design means that background noise is cut way, way down.
The only major negative thing I have to say about this microphone is it has a major learning curve. The PR-40 requires a new technique to use it, no more sloppy positioning, and breathing. Once you get that down,
and really only practice makes perfect, you have a super great microphone.
My upgrade also marks the first time that Bryan and I are not using the same model of Mic. Bryan chose a very vintage looking Microphone called the Shure 55SH Series II (at least I think that’s it). I like the retro style and I think it helps Bryan get into the right mindset for Mack Murphy P.I. and I can see why, it sure is slick looking like its from the 1920s.
If your looking to record some great vocals, maybe for a Podcast or some other project, I can’t recommend the PR-40 enough! I also highly recommend Scott Bourne’s review of the PR-40 lots of good information.
